Who you are dealing with

Poison Powder is a small independent software house based in the United Kingdom, and is the publisher of the applications listed on this site. Correspondence goes to greg@poisonpowder.com. Using an app or this website means accepting what follows.

Apple's terms come first

Poison Powder apps are distributed through Apple's App Store, and Apple's Licensed Application End User License Agreement governs your licence to use them. Where anything on this page conflicts with Apple's terms, Apple's terms win. What follows adds to them; it does not replace them.

Your licence

You get a personal, non-exclusive licence to use the apps on the devices your Apple Account permits, for as long as you like. You may not resell them, rent them out, redistribute them, or take them apart to build a competing product, except where the law says you may regardless of what this page says.

Paid unlocks

Some apps sell a one-off unlock for their full feature set. It is a single purchase, not a subscription: there is nothing to cancel and nothing that renews. The free tier is not time-limited, and free exports are never watermarked or degraded.

Apple takes the payment and handles refunds. If you want a refund, request it from Apple through reportaproblem.apple.com — I cannot issue one, because the money never reaches me directly. Write to me anyway if something is wrong; I would rather fix it.

What the apps can and cannot convert

The apps are built on Apple's own media and imaging frameworks and are bounded by what those frameworks support. This is a deliberate choice, and it has consequences worth knowing before you buy:

• Container and codec support varies by app, and by the version of macOS you are running.
• Maskelyne handles no MKV, WebM, FLAC, OGG, AVI, WMV or FLV, and cannot write MP3 — macOS ships an MP3 decoder but no MP3 encoder, so MP3 comes in and never goes out.
• Some formats are available only on newer versions of macOS, or only on machines with the right hardware encoder. An app hides what it cannot do on your machine rather than offering it and then failing.

Each app states its limits in its own empty state and in its App Store description. A format an app does not support is a limit of the app, not a fault in your file.

Using them lawfully

You are responsible for having the right to convert the files you convert. Do not use these apps to infringe anyone's copyright, and do not use them on material you are not entitled to process.

The apps will not circumvent digital rights management under any circumstances. Protected input is detected and refused, and no request, framing or justification will change that.

These are tools, not a service

An app runs on your machine and needs nothing from me to keep working. There is no server to go down and no subscription to lapse. Equally, there is no promise of updates, of support for future versions of macOS, or that any app will remain on the App Store — though I will say so here if one is withdrawn.

Keep your own backups

The apps write new files and are designed to leave your originals untouched. Software being software, keep backups of anything you cannot afford to lose, and check the output before you delete the input.

What is not promised

The apps and this website are provided as they are. To the fullest extent the law allows, they come with no warranty of any kind, and I am not liable for lost profits, lost data, or any indirect or consequential loss arising from using them.

None of this limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be limited. If you are a consumer, your statutory rights under UK consumer law are unaffected by anything on this page.

This website

The text, images and design of this site belong to me. You are welcome to link to it and to quote from it with attribution. The app names and marks are mine. The site is offered as it is, and I do not promise it will always be available or free of errors.

Changes

These terms may change as the apps do. The revision date at the top of the page changes with them, and the version published here is the one that applies.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have jurisdiction. If you are a consumer resident elsewhere in the UK or in the EU, you keep the protection of the mandatory law of the place you live, and may bring proceedings there.
